2011 Sportsmanship Awards

sportsmanship award winners

On Monday, April 18 two players and two coaches from the city's youth basketball leagues were recognized before the Parks & Recreation Commission for their outstanding commitment to good sportsmanship.  Sportsmanship awards are presented each year to players and coaches who exemplify the values of the city's T.R.U.S.T. program.

This year's recipients are:

Coaches - Angelo Soto and Brian Gallagher

Players - Austin Casto, 7th grade, and Grant Yasukochi, 8th grade

Steve Herrerra, recreation supervisor for the city’s youth sports programs, explains the actions that merited these awards.  “Despite a losing record, Coach Soto encouraged his team to maintain their unity and continue to work hard regardless of the score.  He focused on teamwork rather than placing blame on individual players.  Coach Gallagher consistently reinforced good sportsmanship among parents, and was quick to address to any behavior that was disrespectful.  He also used each game as a teaching opportunity, and met with his team after each game to go over things that they can improve on.  Player Austin helped his fellow players to get up from the ground when they were fouled hard. You do not see this often enough in youth sports. Player Grant was fouled a lot and rarely complained. He showed leadership by showing his team to move forward regardless of the calls.”
