AARP Taxes

Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, AARP tax volunteers will be here to assist with seniors with 2010 tax returns.  They will be available by appointment only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the last appointment ending at 4:30 p.m..  Please come in, or call 760-602-4650 for an appointment.  Be sure to bring any necessary documents.

 

Global Affair Duet Dining Entertainment

Thursday, March 11, 2010 from 1 to 3:00 p.m., Carlsbad Senior Center computer instructor Thomas Collins will illustrate how people will be getting their “multimedia” through flat screen TV’s which will be connected to a computer and the Internet. The computer will have Windows 7 and a powerful multimedia system under the hood known as “Media Center”.

 

Ceramics 101

Students will learn and incorporate the methods for building clay vessels with simple tools, clay and water, and will work at their own pace. Create individual projects each week such as garden art, flowerpots, teapots, platters, birdhouses and sculpture portraits. Some specific projects will be encouraged for more advanced students. All ceramic work will be kiln-fired and painted with non-toxic glazes. Potter wheels are not available at this facility. Instructor Christine Boulos owned a freelance design and fine art company and has taught classes to students of all ages. No previous experience is necessary. Five classes beginning Wednesday, Mar. 17, 2010.  from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Art Studio with an open lab Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. for enrolled students. $60 residents/$70NR.  $24 materials fee. Simply Cooking for the Fun of It!

Would you like to cook in an organized fashion that takes all the frustration out of preparation? In this course, you will be taught what the French call “mise en place,” enabling you to enjoy cooking as you never have before. Experienced chef and instructor Steve Pettersen will show what herbs and spices complement foods, as well as what cooking methods bring out their best flavors. Join us in the kitchen every third Wednesday of each month beginning Wednesday, March 17, 2010 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. $5.00 requested donation per class.

 

“A Simplified Look At 2010 Medicare Advantage Options”

Confused by all of the Medicare Advantage (MA) plan choices offered?  Attend this free seminar to discover options during this like-for-likeMedicare Enrollment period ending March 31, 2010. Nick Salerno from SSIS will be here Friday, March 19th, 2010 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. to discuss some important changes to the Medicare Advantage and Part D plans for the current year.  There will be a brief explanation of the four basic “parts” of Medicare to help clarify parts A, B, C and D of Medicare enabling recipients to make educated decisions regarding health care coverage.

For people over the age of 65, falling is the number one reason people are admitted to the hospital and is the leading cause of injury. Without good balance, one's risk of falling increases significantly. In-Home Therapy Services of San Diego is offering free personal 10 minute balance screenings Thursday, March 25th, 2010 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Reservations required, call (760) 602-4650 to reserve a 10 minute screening.

 

Seven Challenges to Successful Retirement (Second Adulthood)

Retirement in 21st century America is a very different from that of our grandparents - we shoulder new responsibilities and unique challenges more than any time before.  In struggling with the new reality, it often leaves us confused and frustrated wondering what it takes to be successful in retirement or what we call “second adulthood.”  Current research indicates there are seven challenges to successful retirement, and in this lecture we will identify each challenge as well as discuss strategies to overcome them. Thursday, March 25th, 2010 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Part one of a five-part series.
