Fleet
The Fleet Operations Division is responsible for procuring and maintaining vehicles and equipment for city use. Fleet employees maintain and repair more than 300 city vehicles and 150 other pieces of equipment. The division also performs smog inspection, responds to road calls for vehicles disabled in the field, and supplies fuel and lubrication oils to the city, as well as to the Carlsbad Unified School District and the Encina Wastewater Authority.
Environmental stewardship
Fleet operations is also responsible for meeting environmental compliance regulations for the city, with respect to emissions from diesel engines and other related issues. The division has been and continues to be proactive in procuring recycled oil and other automotive fluids, and also recycles fluids, metal and other materials to minimize their introduction to the waste stream.
In recent years, fleet operations has procured several hybrid vehicles as new or replacement units for the fleet. The city's current fleet includes Toyota Prius, Honda Civic and Ford Escape hybrid vehicles. Procurement of hybrid vehicles is recommended in those cases where it makes economic and operational sense for the city.
Fiscal responsibility
Fleet operations uses a mixture of in-house and outsourced fleet services to ensure that the city's vehicle maintenance and repair functions are provided at the lowest cost to customers.
