Twenty-one members of the public joined Council Member Ramona Finnila and Mark Packard along with City staff on Monday, October 20th to discuss their vision of Carlsbad's future. Here are highlights of their discussions about Carlsbad's future:

Top Issues and Concerns:

Newsletter/Communication
Multi-generational facilities
Decide what functions should be in a Civic Center
Village as heart of CityofCarlsbad
Keep the charm and character
Socialize/Interact with neighbors
Civic Center - Cultural/Park/Meeting Place
Create Unique Coastal Focal Places
Create Focal Points in Neighborhoods
Encouraging Community Volunteer Groups (w/diverse membership)
Spirit
How can we create spirit?
Make school district part of City boundaries
Implementing 2 ½ day conference
Make a commitment
How do we re-instill the sense of community?
Some kind of continuum when entering and/or leaving Carlsbad
Close community
Newsletter/communication (right now it's difficult to get connected; difficult to get information)
Citizen's Academy
Volunteering
Movie Preview information - put City events on it
Central Meeting Place
Main Street Mall
Connecting through schools
City Hall center piece of downtown
Center for Performing Arts (Farmer's)
Library Downtown
More things you put in the area will draw people to it
Revitalize downtown
Multi-generational
Take "State of the City" on the road.
Walking capabilities to get from place to place
Form follows function
Community
What is community? How can we create a sense of community?
Remove the isolating signage to the housing communities
A place of shared vision, shared values
Mentoring "veterans" bring along the "rookies"
Caring for all
Valuing the "individuality" and "Personality" of the various neighborhoods
"Walkability" of our neighborhoods. We want to and we can get to know our neighbors.
Focal points in neighborhoods, such as parks, community centers, etc.
Create attractive spaces that people want to congregate and walk
Community feels like:
Socializing with neighbors
Interacting with neighbors
Changing any negatives in the neighborhood
Sharing spaces, e.g. shopping in Carlsbad Village (small scale, quaint)
Create a Community Center - cultural center
What should a civic center look like?
Civic Center should have:
Theater/Auditorium (multiple uses - adaptable)
Parks (e.g. Central Park)
Restaurants
Easy to get to (by Coaster)
Charm & Character
Concession Stands
Gathering Place
Pool
Spirit
How do we create spirit? Where does our spirit come from?
Take the spirit from the downtown to "other" Carlsbad communities.
Say "hi" when walking down the boardwalk
The village is the "heart" of Carlsbad - need more neighborhoods similar to the downtown
Small town spirit
(Need to create a) sense of community geographically
Libraries (as cultural spirit)
Importance of Carlsbad history
Place
What can (or does) make Carlsbad different?
Quality of government
Social spirit
Flower Fields
Golf industry
Care for environment
Integrity of our government leadership
We still face challenges to create unique focal places - before all opportunities are gone
What can we do to make Carlsbad a special place?
More public transportation to connect our city geography, makes walking and distances difficult
Save/cherish the beach setting
World-class open spaces
Add more trees, thoughtfully
Create a park on the ocean
Seize the opportunity - be proactive: park, amphitheatre, theatre (we missed buying Hosp Grove)
