Sixty-five residents joined Council Members Matt Hall and Mark Packard at Aviara Oaks Elementary School to discuss their vision of Carlsbad's future. Their top ideas, by category, were:

Place
Places to go and meet.
Faraday not a good location or space for community Civic place.
Decentralize civil places.
Community
Because of geography, traffic, different. Schools, city is too decentralized to have the goal of a central focal point.
Accept different identities of each quadrant and plan that way
Communication about what's going on in the City
Welcome Center
Create neighborhood identities
Pedestrian
Create Activity
Pride
Support network
Belonging
Fragments - how to tie together?
Expand street fairs

Pride for nature in facilities

A quick point immediately brought out by a participant: Not enough parking - community needs roads, trails, pathways and parking.

What does the Carlsbad community feel like?
Sense of place
Feels like home

Place you can meet/paths cross/centralized place
Carlsbad feels disjointed - areas of town feel separated.
What makes a "Great Community"?
Sense of community in downtown area. - sense of history/walking
Where are examples of "Great Community"?
Encinitas has a community feel (downtown area/train station, transportation. Laguna Beach, Bolder, Colorado.
Recreation opportunities help to create community.
Not just shopping - a combination.
What are the qualities of great public places?
Free Parking
Seawall
New Orleans - Activities (and parking areas)
Seaport Village - a lot of walking, kids play, Big enough to walk around the place
Beauty - Architecturally (good) Ex: S. Carolina. Architecturally it's so beautiful. A lot of open space, trees, community character.
We are different than S. Carolina - but we could still have these things (above)
Can't hear the cars
Art institute in Chicago - right by lake downtown but so beautiful.
Fountains/water is so beautiful.
Yeah - no more bars (along ocean)
Sufficient amount of attractions to spend more time
Public park instead of power plant
What a great piece of land
Safe - don't always feel safe in Carlsbad
Clean - I feel safer when things/places are clean.
Crime rate should be low
We need to take more personal responsibility.
Don't build on every square inch
Hope the City does leave empty or recreational parks - and NO structures along the beach.
Expansive space
How does Community create Spirit?
No - Carlsbad separates communities - different developments. How to connect?
Yes - Recreation Department had a campout - with activities helped us to connect.
Carlsbad Faire
Event that's organized that draws people in.
TGIF - Jazz in Park
Need better communication of events.
Carlsbad has a division of kids (CHS vs La Costa Canyon, Valley vs Aviara Oaks etc)
Four school districts confuse City citizens
Choosing to be (live) here in Carlsbad - does create spirit.
Outdoor Theatre (like Vista) is great.
Have a BIG July 4th celebration.
How do we connect with others in Community?
Church friendly
Well known community events (and advertised)
More places like Seawall - walkable.
Use Cable Channel to advertise
July 4 celebration
Art walk/art faire
Advertise volunteering opportunities.
What about a really big park.
Put volunteer opportunities on the website.
Make Macario Canyon a Balboa Park - passive and NO BALLFIELDS. Etc.
Golf Course - well maybe yes but may NO. - use the parkland to serve as many people as possible (i.e. no golf only)
Share our ideas
Create forum for discussions - HOA, Churches.
Local government should be more proactive in connecting. Who are "they"?
Council meetings could be held in my area of town, in my neighborhood.
