CCPS LogoAfter celebrating our 50th anniversary as an incorporated city in 2002, the City of Carlsbad decided an important new crossroads was ahead. To take advantage of the opportunities, City leaders decided to re-think the City's past, present and future. In doing so they looked to the community to help define a vision. And so, the "Connecting Community, Place & Spirit" mission was undertaken, guided by a team of City Council members and staff.

The kick-off of this visioning process was the City Council-sponsored Connecting Community, Place & Spirit Conference on March 17-19, 2003. The purpose of the conference was to create a conversation with and enlist the support of the Carlsbad community about the types of civic and community places we want to create and the associations we can encourage to build and strengthen our community. More than 150 people attended and started the process of thinking about not only the physical part of community - buildings, roads, infrastructure - but also where people can make social and emotional connections.

After the conference, more than a dozen community meetings were held all over the city. More than 600 people attended to offer their insights, during which they shared their vision for Carlsbad's future.

The vision that is ultimately developed will thus reflect the desires of the varied segments of our community and guide the creative design process for all future civic and community facilities.
