Membership

Leo Carrillo Historic Park Enterance
  • Five members appointed by the City Council and one ex-officio representative of the Planning Commission. All regular members must have knowledge of and a demonstrated interest in historic preservation and local history. The commission shall be composed of members having the following qualifications:
    • Three members, each of whom has a different recognized expertise or interest in architecture, archaeology, history, biology, engineering or geology;
    • Two members who have an interest in local history and serve at large from the community;
  • Staff Liaison: History Librarian

Members normally serve four-year terms and must be residents of Carlsbad.

Meetings

Duties

Advises the City Council, Planning Commission and Design Review Board in all matters relating to the identification, protection, retention and preservation of historic areas and sites within the City. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Recommending the designation of historic landmarks or historic districts;
  • Maintaining an historic resources inventory;
  • Rendering advice and guidance, upon the request of the property owner or occupant, on the restoration, alteration, decoration, landscaping or maintenance of any historical area or site; and
  • Conducting programs to educate local citizens regarding historic places, structures or events.

It is a prerequisite for appointment to any City Board, commission, that the applicant be a resident of the City and a registered voter (see M.C. 2.08.090.)
