Citizens Academy

The City of Carlsbad Citizens Academy is a free, seven-week program designed to help Carlsbad residents learn about their city government. It is held twice a year, in the spring and fall, on consecutive Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the exception of one session that includes a citywide bus tour at noon.  View the spring 2018 schedule.

Participants will:

  • Meet City Council members, department heads and staff
  • Learn how decisions are made, how city funds are allocated and how departments operate
  • Enjoy comprehensive overviews of departments and programs and services
  • Discover the current status and future plans for Carlsbad's development, traffic, growth management, recreation, the environment and other topics
  • Participate in lively discussions, role-playing and other fun interactive activities
  • Tour city facilities
  • Become an informed, involved citizen

Citizens Academy is held twice a year, in the spring and fall. Applications are accepted year round, and participants are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis. The spring 2018 schedule is now available.

The academy is free to Carlsbad residents 15 years and older. Class size is limited, and spaces fill up quickly. Call 760-434-2800 today for information and registration.  Completed applications should be returned to:

Applicants who do not get scheduled for the next session will be placed on an enrollment list for future sessions.
