Preparing to vote
Obtain voter registration forms from the Office of the City Clerk or you can register to vote online with the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. The city clerk can also assist in finding the appropriate voters polling place.
Carlsbad is a charter city governed by a five-member City Council. Members of the City Council, city clerk and the city treasurer are elected at large for a four-year term.

In order to qualify as a candidate as a member of the City Council, an individual must be a registered voter and a resident of the City of Carlsbad.
Election responsibilities of the city clerk
The city clerk is responsible for the administration of all municipal elections, by providing the following services:
- Issues nomination papers to candidates
- Serves as filing officer for campaign statements and statements of economic interests
- Provides election results
- Maintains the history of past municipal elections
