Key Dates for November 2016 Election

This November, Carlsbad voters will select two City Council members and approve or reject a city ballot measure requesting approval to rebuild the aging fire station #2.


July 18

Nomination Papers Available
City Council candidates must make an appointment with the City Clerk to obtain nomination forms and get briefing on election process.

Aug. 1

Semi-Annual Campaign Statements Due
Covers Jan. 1 -- June 30, 2016. Must be filed with the City Clerk by 5:30 p.m. (First Class Mail postmark or hand delivery acceptable)

Aug. 12

Last Day to Submit Nomination Papers
No later than 5 p.m. Candidates must file nomination papers and candidate's statement of qualifications. Schedule an appointment with the City Clerk to return papers, 760-434-2917

Aug. 17

Extended Nomination Period Deadline
If an incumbent does not file papers by Aug. 12, the deadline for submitting papers will be extended to Aug. 17.

Aug. 18

Random Alphabet Drawing
California Secretary of State will hold a random alphabet drawing, which the City Clerk will use to determine the order in which candidates' names appear on the ballot.

Sept. 29

First Pre-Election Campaign Statements Due
Covers July 1 -- Sept 24, 2016 Filed with City Clerk's Office by 5:30 p.m. (First Class Mail postmark or hand delivery acceptable)

Voter Guides Mailed
Voter information guides will be mailed to voter between Sept. 29 and Oct. 18.

Early Voting Begins
Vote early at the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office 5600 Overland Ave, San Diego, CA 92123

Vote by Mail Ballots Mailed
Ballots sent between Oct. 10 and Nov. 1 to voters requesting to vote by mail.

Oct. 24

Voter Registration Deadline
Last day to register for November election. Register online at http://registertovote.ca.gov

Oct. 27

Second Pre-Election Campaign Statements Due
Cover Sept. 25 -- Oct. 22, 2016 Filed with City Clerk's Office by 5:30 p.m. Must be personally delivered or guaranteed overnight service. Postmarks are NOT acceptable for this filing.

Last Day to Request Vote by Mail Ballot
