ADULT LEARNERS

Adults interested in enrolling as learners may call Literacy for Life at the Carlsbad City Library Learning Center at (760) 931-4510.

Adult learners entering the program are:

  • English-speaking (English is their only language or they are fluent in English)
  • At least 16 years old and not currently enrolled in high school
  • Women and men from diverse backgrounds
  • Seeking better skills for their job futures
  • Wanting to help their children succeed in school
  • Often able to do some reading and writing, but not enough to participate effectively in today's rapidly changing world

Time commitment for an adult learner:

  • 2 tutoring sessions per week
  • Each session lasts 1 1/2 hours
  • At least 1 hour a week of study at home

What we study:

  • Phonics and spelling
  • Reading aloud
  • Handwriting and use of the computer keyboard
  • Reading comprehension and vocabulary
  • Capitalization and punctuation
  • Writing checks, notes, and letters
  • Communicating thoughts in written form
  • Job-related reading and writing
  • Maps, geography, history, government
  • Arithmetic and daily life math
  • Using the public library
  • Study skills
