On Thursday, April 7 at 6:51 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department received a call from the California State Parks Police to assist them with a traffic collision. The State Parks Officer reported that the collision occurred on Carlsbad Boulevard just south of Avenida Encinas and that he was holding the driver, who was still inside the vehicle, at gunpoint
Upon arrival, Carlsbad Police Officers located a white Ford E350 van which had collided with a tree on the east curb line of southbound Carlsbad Boulevard just south of Avenida Encinas.
California State Parks Police Officers had the driver of the vehicle at gunpoint and were communicating with him from their police vehicle.
The California State Parks Police Officers reported that they had heard the collision from their office and responded to provide assistance. When they contacted the driver of the vehicle he spoke incoherently and tried to move his vehicle against their orders. State parks officers withdrew to their police vehicle for safety.
For over three hours California State Parks Police Officers and Carlsbad Police Officers tried to convince the driver of the vehicle to voluntarily exit the vehicle however he refused.
Finally, Carlsbad Police Officers found it necessary to forcibly remove the driver from the vehicle to take him into custody.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 37-year-old Kirk Hansen of Encinitas. He was arrested for felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
