Seven Candidates Running for Council

By the Aug. 12, 5 p.m., deadline, seven candidates returned their nomination forms to run for the Carlsbad City Council. The County of San Diego Registrar of Voters has five days to verify the signatures and declare the candidates official.

Those submitting nomination forms included:

  • Keith Blackburn
  • Melanie Burkholder
  • Bill Fowler
  • Brandon Rowley
  • Cori Schumacher
  • Ann Tanner
  • Lorraine Wood

As of the time of this release, the Registrar of Voters has only verified the signatures on the nomination paper of Lorraine Wood, declaring that she had sufficient signatures to have her name placed on the November ballot. The deadline for verification of the other candidates’ signatures is Aug. 17.

Two City Council seats will be up for election this November, those held by Mayor Pro Tem Lorraine Wood and Council Member Keith Blackburn. The City of Carlsbad has five City Council members, including an elected mayor, who serve at large for staggered four year terms. The mayor’s position, the other two City Council seats, the City Clerk and the City Treasurer will be up for election in 2018.

A candidate must be a resident and registered voter in the City of Carlsbad at the time nomination papers are issued.

To run for City Council, which is considered a part time position, candidates must be registered to vote in the City of Carlsbad at the time they submit their nomination papers. Nomination papers must include signatures from 20 Carlsbad registered voters. City Council members receive a base salary of $24,626 annually plus benefits.

In addition to the City Council elections, the City of Carlsbad has placed a measure on the November ballot asking voters to approve or reject a city ballot measure requesting approval to rebuild the aging fire station #2, located in La Costa.

The city has posted election related information on its website, including key dates leading up to the Nov. 8 election, including voter registration deadlines, early voting opportunities and candidate campaign statements.
