Carlsbad Leads County in New Startups

According to a new report, Carlsbad leads the county in new startups for the past two years. The San Diego 2015 Innovation Report was prepared by CONNECT, a San Diego organization that supports the innovation economy.

The CONNECT Innovation Report is an annual study of the strength and impact of the overall innovation economy in San Diego. The report also highlighted that in 2015, businesses in San Diego County had almost 6,500 patents granted, the second most in the state. Of those, more than 650 patents went to Carlsbad-based businesses, according to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records. That gives Carlsbad an average of 12 patents for every 1,000 workers compared to 3.6 patents per 1,000 workers in San Diego or eight per 1,000 workers in San Francisco.

Other leaders in launching startups include downtown San Diego with 54, Sorrento Valley with 52, Carmel Valley with 46 and La Jolla with 44.
