Council District Map Workshops, 6/10

The City of Carlsbad will hold two workshops hosted by professional demographers working on the city’s transition to “by district” City Council elections. Demographers will create suggested district boundaries for public review, and members of the public are invited to create their own suggested boundaries. These workshops are for people who would like help creating their maps or have general questions about how districts are composed. Bilingual staff will be available to assist community members who prefer to speak Spanish.

Saturday, June 10
Dove Library
Gowland Meeting Room
1775 Dove Lane
10 a.m. to noon

Saturday, June 10
Harding Community Center
3096 Harding St.
3 to 5 p.m.

The workshops will provide a hands-on, informal opportunity to learn about the map making tools available and the rules for creating districts. National Demographics Corporation, the company hired by the city to assist with the transition to district City Council elections, has provided several ways for the public to create their own suggested district boundaries:

  • Provide input on maps created by the demographers
  • Provide general input to the City Council at an upcoming public hearing
  • Draw a map showing suggested boundaries
  • Fill in a blank map
  • Utilize an online map making tool

For any of these map-making options, interested members of the public can get a “tool kit” that has demographic information and maps showing the Census blocks where current City Council members live, school district boundaries and the distribution of the city’s Latino population. An excel spreadsheet with city demographic information is also available to make it easier to calculate the population and demographic information for proposed districts.

All of these resources are available on the city’s website. Print outs are available at city libraries, City Hall and the Faraday Administration Center. To request information be mailed to your home, contact the City Clerk’s Office at clerk@carlsbadca.gov or 760-434-2808.

Background on the city’s transition to electing City Council members by district is available on the city’s website at carlsbadca.gov/districts.
