Lakeside Man Arrested after Fleeing Scene of Traffic Collision

On June 27, at 12:45 p.m., City of Carlsbad Police officers responded to the report of a traffic collision at Palomar Airport Road near Eagle Drive.

On arrival, officers found two vehicles were involved in a collision. Both vehicles were traveling west on Palomar Airport Road when they collided. The collision caused both vehicles to leave the roadway.

One vehicle collided with a tree on the north side of the road causing major injuries to the driver.

The second vehicle left the north side of the roadway and travelled down a fifty foot embankment where it landed on a parked vehicle and caught on fire. The driver of the burning vehicle fled the vehicle and the scene on foot.

Witnesses gave officers the direction of the fleeing driver. Officers, including a K-9 unit, located the driver approximately one-half mile away. The driver was hiding on the hillside in the brush. The K-9 unit was used to apprehend the driver and the driver sustained injuries.

The fleeing driver was identified as 49-year-old Larry Utt from Lakeside. Utt was arrested for felony hit & run causing injury and resisting arrest.

Both drivers were transported to local hospitals and treated for their injuries.

The Police Department’s traffic unit responded to the scene to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the collision.
