Parks & Recreation Commission Vacancies

The City of Carlsbad is seeking residents interested in filling two vacancies on the City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Commission. Applications for these volunteer positions are available on the city’s website or in the City Clerk’s Office, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Applications must be submitted to the City Clerk's Office by noon on July 31.

The Parks & Recreation Commission:

  • Advises and makes recommendations to the City Council on matters pertaining to planting, trimming, pruning and care of all trees, shrubs and plants in and upon any street, park, boulevard, alley or public place within the city
  • Equips, operates, supervises and maintains parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, swimming pools, swimming centers, indoor recreation centers, auditoriums and other public grounds or buildings in or about the city, which the commission may from time to time acquire, provide, authorize and designate for such use, subject to the approval of the City Council
  • Recommends regulations necessary to maintain the aesthetics, safety, financial well-being and order of the park and recreational facilities
  • Oversees the spending of money appropriated by the City Council for park and recreation purposes 

The Parks & Recreation Commission has seven members who are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council to serve four year terms. The current vacancies will: 

  • Complete an unexpired term – present to August 2019.
  • Complete a four-year term – August 2017 to August 2021 

The Parks & Recreation Commission currently meets at 5:30 p.m. the third Monday of the month at the City Council Chambers at Carlsbad City Hall, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive.  

Applicants must be Carlsbad residents and registered to vote. Parks & Recreation Commission members are required to complete two hours of ethics training every two years and file a Fair Political Practices Commission Form 700 annual statement of economic interests. This statement, which is a public document, details a person’s financial interests such as property ownership and business ownership.
