DUI Sobriety/Safety Checkpoint to be Held in Carlsbad

Beginning on Saturday, July 15 at 7 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department will be conducting a DUI sobriety/safety checkpoint on Palomar Airport Road at Gateway Drive.

Sobriety checkpoints are a technique used by law enforcement to evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment at specific points on the roadway.

According to the California Highway Patrol, “Sobriety checkpoint operations increase the public's awareness of the hazards of drinking and driving and, in many cases, serve as a deterrent to those drivers who may otherwise drive impaired.” www.chp.ca.gov

“Every two minutes a person is injured in a drunk driving collision,” notes MADD. “An additional 27 people die each day as a result of those collisions.” www.MADD.org

The checkpoint will be conducted from 7 p.m. through 12:30 a.m. the following day.

“The reduction of impaired driving is everyone’s concern,” stated traffic officer and program coordinator Shaun Lawton.  “Working together we can save lives.”
