Leo Carrillo Ranch Improvements Begin

The City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department is starting construction on improvements to Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, located at 6200 Flying Leo Carrillo Lane. Improvements include stable restoration and new restrooms. Work is expected to be complete in summer 2018.

At a Glance

  • The improvements are part of the Leo Carrillo Ranch Master Plan, were prioritized based on community input gathered during the 2015 “prioritization and cost estimate” phase.
  • Improvements for Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, slated for completion in summer 2018, include stable restoration to provide a new space for exhibits, special events, education programs, and six new restrooms where a dilapidated chicken coop once stood.
  • The park will remain open during construction, however access to the stable and chicken coop areas will be restricted. Access to the path and east footbridge to Deedie’s House will also be restricted.
  • Some annual community events may not be held during construction.
  • A bat relocation program is being implemented prior to construction to safely remove bats from the stable prior to construction.
  • Patrons with questions about the construction project should call Parks & Recreation Administration at 760-434-2826 or email parksandrec@carlsbadca.gov.

More Information

The stable restoration includes installation of new concrete flooring; repair and restoration of existing clay tile flooring; repair and restoration of interior and exterior walls, windows and doors; repair of worn wood features of the bunkhouse and animal pens; restoration of the porches on the north and south side of the stable; installation of interior lighting and security system; drainage improvements; and replacement of the 20 year old wood shingle roof.

The stable and bunkhouse areas are expected to be used for public and private events, and will include interpretive displays. Additionally, the historic corrals, bull pen post and plank fencing previously located between the stable and chicken coop will be reconstructed. Drought tolerant landscaping and new irrigation in selected areas around the stable will be installed as needed for storm water management.

The second part of the project is the construction of a new public restroom facility equipped with plumbing and a janitorial storage area. The restroom will be located in the area south of the stables where a dilapidated chicken coop once stood. The structure will be designed to replicate the original facade of the chicken coop, incorporating horizontal wood cladding. Additionally, the project will feature installation of drought tolerant landscaping and irrigation in selected areas around the restroom.

All work on the projects will comply with the Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties – Standards for Reconstruction.

Regular construction hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Neighbors have been advised that construction vehicles will come and go from the site; that some parts of construction will be noisy; and that a portion of the park will be closed during construction. Patrons with questions about the construction project should call Parks & Recreation Administration at 760-434-2826 or email parksandrec@carlsbadca.gov.

The construction contract for this project is roughly $2 million. This project is funded with Public Facility Fee Funds and Park-in-Lieu Fee Funds. This project represents two elements of 20 total elements identified in the Leo Carrillo Ranch Park Master Plan – Phase 3. The city contracted with Tovey-Schultz Construction, Inc., for project construction.
