The City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department started construction on the Ocean Street Beach Access Improvements Project on Jan. 9 with the Rue Des Chateaux and Beech Avenue entrances.
Construction began on Jan. 9 at the entrances located at Rue Des Chateaux and Beech Ave.
These two entrances will be closed to the public during construction.
The work is phased so that all other entrances will remain open during construction to maintain public access to the beach.
Regular construction hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Those who live in the area or visit the surrounding neighborhood regularly may notice construction-related noise and increased construction vehicle traffic.
Improvements in all seven entrances will be completed at the end of May 2018.
Upon completion, the new features will make the entrances more inviting, safer and easier to find.
New features and amenities will include:
o More attractive and inviting stairs, railings and landings
o Amenities like bike racks, benches and trash/recycling receptacles
o New lighting, crosswalks and other safety features
o Enhanced places to stop and enjoy the view
o Beautified entrances with drought tolerant landscaping and design features
o Improved privacy, security and aesthetics for neighboring properties
The construction contract for the Ocean Street Beach Access Project is roughly $3.1 million. The project is funded with General Capital Construction Funds/Infrastructure Replacement Funds, approved by the City Council in the Capital Improvement Program.
The project is one of a number of initiatives the city is working to make it easier and safer to get to the beach and travel along Carlsbad Boulevard, the old Highway 101, whether by car, on a bike or by foot. The project is based on the Carlsbad Community Vision, a set of nine core values developed through a two year public outreach process. The vision emphasizes maintaining Carlsbad’s small-town beach community character, sustainability, walking, biking and public transportation, open space and the natural environment, and active, healthy lifestyles, among other values.
