El Camino Real Paving Underway

The City of Carlsbad will resurface El Camino Real between Gateway and Arenal Roads in both directions beginning Monday, Jan. 22 as part of the city’s annual program to keep the streets free of cracks and potholes.  Most work is scheduled to take place between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The city will work to minimize any inconvenience to businesses, residents and commuters while the work is being completed.

The City of Carlsbad Public Works Department evaluates the city’s streets every year using pavement management software to identify which streets need a fresh surface. Streets are selected based on their age and pavement condition.

“El Camino Real is one of the most travelled roads in the city, so are trying to finish the project as quickly as possible while maintaining a high level of quality and safety,” said City of Carlsbad Municipal Projects Manager Valerie Airey, who is overseeing the project. “Keeping our streets in good condition is good for our residents and helps prevent bigger, costlier problems later.”

El Camino Real was scheduled for a “pavement overlay.” This involves patching the surface to remove cracks and other defects, then applying a layer of rubberized asphalt concrete to the surface. For this project the city will be using recycled materials, which will help keep approximately 22,730 waste tires from entering landfills.  The city was recently awarded a grant through the 2016-17 Rubberized Pavement Grant Program funded through the Department of Resources and Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).

The $1.8 million contract for the pavement management project was awarded to ATP General Engineering Contractors; City of Carlsbad construction managers will supervise the work.

Pavement management is funded through the city’s Capital Improvement Program budget, and the money comes from state gas tax revenue, local TransNet tax funds and fees paid by local trash haulers.
