Fatal Traffic Collision on Carlsbad Village Drive at Peninsula Drive

Impaired driving thought to be the cause of fatal traffic collision

On February 4, at 10:13 p.m., officers from the City of Carlsbad Police Department responded to area of Carlsbad Village Drive and Peninsula Drive regarding a serious injury traffic collision.

On arrival, officers found that a Toyota truck, operated by a male driver, had collided with a guard rail at a high rate of speed.  After hitting the guard rail, the vehicle then struck a tree and a parked car which caused it to overturn and come to rest on its roof in the driveway of a residence on Peninsula drive.

During the collision, the driver was ejected from the truck and was found lying on the sidewalk by responding personnel.

The Carlsbad Fire Department arrived and provided advanced life support to the male driver.  The driver was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of the vehicle was proceeding eastbound on Carlsbad Village Drive at a high rate of speed, ran the red light at College Blvd and struck the guard rail at the intersection of Carlsbad Village Drive and Peninsula Drive.

Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision.  The driver was identified as a 29-year-old male from San Diego.

Traffic collison investigators responded to the scene to conduct a full investigation.
