Streets Projects Approved

The City Council approved three separate projects July 9 that will improve local roads, lighting and pedestrian safety.

 

Crosswalk Safety

More street crossings in Carlsbad will get painted crosswalks and “rapid flashing beacons” installed, which help alert drivers when someone is about to enter a crosswalk. Locations were chosen based on their proximity to shopping areas, businesses and recreation areas.

The project cost, $210,000, is paid for with gas tax money.

 

Street Lights

About 1,500 street lights will be replaced as part of an ongoing program to keep up with needed infrastructure maintenance. Some of the areas of focus include intersections with traffic signals, major corridors, employment and transit areas and along Carlsbad Boulevard. The total cost is $675,808, and the project is expected to take about two months.

 

Street Resurfacing

A project to resurface streets in south Carlsbad was just approved as part of an annual program to keep local streets well maintained. La Costa Avenue from El Camino Real to Camino De Las Caches, Viejo Castilla Way, Navarra Drive and Pirineos Way will get a new layer of asphalt, which prolongs the life of streets and helps avoid costly repairs such as pot holes. The city monitors the conditions of all public streets to ensure they stay in good repair. The ones most in need of attention are included in the annual work plan. When streets are resurfaced, the city has the opportunity to adjusts the widths of traffic and bike lanes or create bike lanes where they don’t exist today. Following the resurfacing La Costa Avenue will have bike lanes on both sides of the street. The cost of this year’s asphalt overlay project is about $2.2 million and is paid for with a combination of gas tax money and TransNet local funds, which come from county sales taxes that are allocated to cities by the San Diego Regional Transportation Commission to finance local road improvement projects. Work is scheduled for late summer.
