New Youth Literacy Programs

Carlsbad City Library is celebrating kids and families this fall by participating in special programs designed to instill a lifelong love of reading, learning and imagination. Participation is free at all Carlsbad City Library locations. 

At a Glance 

Library Card Sign-Up Month

  • The American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide are joining together to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.
  • Carlsbad City Library is launching new youth-specific library card designs the month of September. The cards are free for babies and children receiving their first library cards and will be available by Sept. 6 at all Carlsbad City Library locations. 

Baby’s First Visit to the Library

  • This on-going program encourages new parents to bring their baby to any Carlsbad City Library location to receive a free bag filled with information about library programs and services for all ages, a board book for their baby and facts about the importance of reading to your baby. 

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program

  • Carlsbad City Library is participating in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.
  • The program encourages parents and caregivers to read to preschool children, toddlers and babies in order to improve their vocabulary, listening and language skills, and increase their attention spans.
  • To participate, create a free account in Beanstack and track your family’s progress online.
  • Families will receive reading incentives for reaching milestones along the way to their first 1,000 books.
