Officer Alonso DeVelasco has been a member of the Carlsbad Police Department since September 2001. In September 2005, Alonso was selected to become a Motor Officer. Alonso was raised in Carlsbad and exhibits pride and ownership in serving his community. He has established a solid reputation in the community. Alonso's work ethic is one of his strongest traits. He consistently leads the traffic division in enforcement activity. He routinely volunteers to work overtime in patrol and for special events. Alonso is proactive at all times. He is always punctual and prepared for duty. In 2006, Alonso was recognized as one of our “healthy employees,” having used no sick leave. Alonso continues to demonstrate a problem-solving approach to his work. Alonso took the initiative to conduct Carlsbad PD's first Driver's License/Safety checkpoint. Twice during 2007, Officer DeVelasco led these checkpoints, involving personnel from Traffic, Community Services, senior volunteers, CSOs, and Streets. Each checkpoint resulted in dozens of citations and impounded vehicles. Officer DeVelasco is supportive of his fellow officers and routinely volunteers to assist them in their workload. As a bilingual officer, he willingly assists members of traffic, patrol, and investigations to assist with translation. Alonso also attended a town hall meeting regarding immigration issues at Jefferson Elementary School, where he received positive feedback from the community. In January 2007, Officer DeVelasco was selected as a member of the Carlsbad Police Department's SWAT Team. He has completed the P.O.S.T. certified SWAT academy and also the Field Training Officer academy. He recently played an important role in the phase training of one of our new officers. In 2007, Officer DeVelasco represented the Carlsbad Police Department at police motorcycle competitions throughout the region. He placed in the top three at all of them. Alonso is well respected within the San Diego County Motor Officers' Association, not only for his exceptional riding skills, but his positive attitude and his encouragement of others. Alonso has been asked to coordinate the San Diego County Motor Officers' Association Annual Motor Competition, which will be held at Legoland in September 2008. Officer DeVelasco demonstrates a commitment to professional excellence, acts in support of others, and is a leader in the law enforcement profession. |
