AWARDS & RECOGNITIONThe Recreation Department really shines through our programs and people. T.R.U.S.TT.R.U.S.T. is a program of the Carlsbad Recreation Department. It stands for "Teaching Respect, Unity and Sportsmanship through Teamwork." The League of California Cities has selected the city of Carlsbad as a 2006 Helen Putnam Award winner. The 2006 award winners were honored today during the League’s annual conference at the San DiegoConvention Center. The city of Carlsbad received the Grand Prize in the category of Enhancing Public Trust, Ethics, and Community Involvement for its Teaching Respect, Unity, and Sportsmanship through Teamwork (TRUST) program. The TRUST program provides quality activities that are safe, fair and enriching for participants, spectators and administrators. Based on a code of conduct and formalized training program for recreation staff, coaches, parents and participants, and enjoying strong city council and city management support, TRUST broadened a national sports model in scope and scale, extending the spirit of sportsmanship to all recreation activities and participants. The Helen Putnam Award for Excellence program recognizes outstanding cities that deliver the highest quality and level of service in the most effective manner possible. Trail BlastThe hidden treasure is a healthier you! The Trail blast program won the California Trails and Greenways Event Merit Award given in recognition of an important trail/greenway program. The award was presented on May 12 at the California Trails and Greenways Conference in Folsom, CA. Trail blast was an idea that came from staff participating on the Departments Health and Wellness Team. Commitment to Learning AwardOn April 20th, the Recreation Department received the "Commitment to Learning Award" at the Kids Included Together conference on April 20 at the Kona Kai resort on Shelter Island in San Diego. The City of Carlsbad, Recreation Department, has been actively involved in the development of a support system which would allow for reasonable accommodations to individual with special needs who want to participate in their programs. Through a partnership with Kids Included Together (KIT), who specializes in training out-of-school time providers in Inclusion, staff had the opportunity to attend four (4) training workshops focusing on an Introduction on Inclusion, Providing Respectful Accommodations, Supporting Positive Behaviors, and partnering with Families. The mission of KIT is to support recreational and social programs that include children with and without disabilities. KIT’s goal is to enrich the lives of all who participate and to increase understanding and acceptance of disabilities as a natural part of life. In keeping with the mission of creating community through people, parks, and programs, the Carlsbad Recreation Department is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to include individuals with or without special needs. At the 3rd Annual national Conference on Inclusion Awards luncheon, KIT presented the Carlsbad Recreation department with an award of Excellence in Commitment to Learning, for their commitment to making staff training on Inclusion a priority. |
