Youth Sports

The City of Carlsbad Recreation Department Youth Sports Division offers a wide variety of programs for area youngsters in a recreational, non-competitive environment. The programs are designed for children of all abilities, with the goal of having fun.

Youth Basketball League

More than 500 youth grades 3-8 participate every year. Space is limited so sign up during the designated registration periods to assure a spot. Registration begins in Septemberor pick up a Community Services Guide for the fall season at any of our recreational facilities. League play occurs during December through March.

All volunteer coaches must go through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) Training and must be fingerprinted before participating. Parents must become a member of the Parent Association for Youth Sports (PAYS) and sign a code of ethics promising to adhere to a Sportsmanship Philosophy.

This recreational atmosphere provides every participant with a framework for fair play while learning the FUN-damentals of the sport.

Pee Wee Indoor Soccer

This program is designed to give boys and girls ages 4-6 an opportunity to begin playing one of the most popular sports around in a recreational, non-competitive environment using safe equipment. Each Saturday, children will arrive 20 minutes prior to game time for warm-ups/practice, and then participate in a game consisting of four 8-minute periods. All players must attend a mandatory evaluation so that balanced teams can be created by Youth Sports staff. Evaluations, practices and games are held in the gymnasium at Stagecoach Community Center, 3420 Camino de los Coches. The season typically runs mid-April to mid-June, on Saturdays.

Pee Wee Basketball

This program is for boys and girls in first or second grade. This spring program helps second graders prepare for participating as third graders in the fall Youth Basketball season. The program provides a framework for sportsmanship and fair play, while teaching the fundamentals of the sport. Children use junior size basketballs (27.5 inches) and 8-foot baskets. All players must attend a mandatory evaluation so that balanced teams can be created by Youth Sports staff. Evaluations, practices and games are held in the gymnasium at Calavera Hills Community Center, 2997 Glasgow Drive. Game play runs from mid-April to mid-June, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Typically, there is one practice and one game each week.

Sports Camps

Sports Camps are held primarily in the summer months but are often available in the winter and spring as well. The City hires contract instructors to put together the itinerary and supervise the daily programming of the camps. Organizations such as Skyhawks Sports Academy, and area high school coaches offer their services to us. Examples of camps include baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, golf, tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, speed and conditioning, Mini-Hawk for ages 4-7, European and all-sports camps. Carlsbad youth can truly pick and choose any sports experience and receive a quality program from outstanding instructors and coaches.
