This lesson is the culmination of all preceding CityStuff activities. The students learn first-hand about the public process and about how residents can and should participate in the process. Each class comes to City Council chambers to conduct a mock council meeting. Using a script, students role-play as they ponder whether or not to cut down an old, beautiful tree whose roots are starting to cause cracks in the sidewalk. (No one has gotten hurt … yet.) When the five mock council members vote, they and the entire class understands that complex decisions are difficult to make and that Council members vote on what they sincerely believe is the right thing to do for Carlsbad.
