Concert Do's and Don'ts
Guidelines and helpful hints
Please take a moment to read these guidelines and helpful hints. Being courteous and respectful of other concertgoers will make the event that much more enjoyable – for everyone.
- Arrive Early
Each two-hour concert begins at 6 p.m., but a few thousand of your closest friends and neighbors will be joining you at each event. So expect some delays, coming and going, and plan accordingly.
- Park Smart
Parking is extremely limited, so please park legally and courteously. Bring comfortable shoes and enjoy your walk to and from the park. “Loading Zone” lanes are available at all sites, and there is free shuttle service at Poinsettia and Calavera Hills this year. See the “Directions, parking and shuttles” page for more details.
- Keep a LOW Profile
Remember that everyone wants to see the performers, so please bring LOW-BACKED chairs only. If you have a health requirement that dictates otherwise, be courteous and choose your seat location accordingly – at the outer edge of the audience. Shade structures are not allowed except along the back fences of the parks.
- Come Prepared
Against mosquitoes and West Nile Virus. Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts to cover your skin, and apply repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Eucalyptus, or IR3535 to clothes and skin.
- No Pets - No Bikes - No Smoking
Pets are not allowed within the concert venue. It’s in the Municipal Code and will be enforced. The same prohibition holds for bicycles, skates, skateboards and rollerblades. And if you want to smoke, you will literally have to leave the park. PLEASE, the laws apply to everyone – not just to “the other guy.”
- Watch Your Kids
Children are welcome, but please keep a watchful eye on them at all times. Also, please make sure they do not disturb neighboring groups. And don’t forget, Art At Jazz, our great hands-on, art-making activity for children, takes place at the second concert at each park site.
Don’t have time to make a picnic dinner? No problem. Check out the refreshments for sale at each concert, offered by Carlsbad Boy Scout Troop 745. The Deli Wishes/Java Break Express coffee truck will be on site for great hot and cold drinks as well.
The City of Carlsbad passed a law in 2009 prohibiting glass containers in all Carlsbad city parks. Realizing that TGIF picnickers traditionally bring glass beverage containers to the concerts, the city has issued a waiver of this regulation for TGIF concert events only.
Keep in mind that we book groups that play music that people can dance to. And do! So if you want to avoid being jitterbugged on, set up your picnic away from the infield area.
- When the Music’s Over
Most of our concerts end by 8:15 p.m. or so. We’d love to let you hang out in the park – but our crew still needs to dismantle the stage. And collect all the trash. And they need to be able to work in a safe environment – safe for them and safe for you. So the park needs to be clear by 9 p.m. We appreciate your cooperation on this matter.
As you enjoy your picnics, please remember to keep your empty bottles and cans separate from the rest of your trash. Then when you do finally clean up your area, just look for the groupings of trash cans – and use the appropriate can: one for your glass bottles, plastic bottles and aluminum cans; and one for all your other trash. And please, when you throw away your glass bottles, do it carefully, so the glass does not b-r-e-a-k. We would appreciate that!
Carlsbad MunicipaI Code 11.32 defines unlawful acts in Carlsbad parks and beaches, including disturbances, sales, solicitation, pets and fires. During TGIF Jazz concerts, violations of the Municipal Code will be enforced. Important highlights include:
- Sales of any items (both for profit and non-profit) are not allowed without a valid permit issued by the City Council.
- Distribution or posting of any handbills, circulars or advertising devises is prohibited. Conduct or solicitation of any business is prohibited.
- Cooking with fire is limited to designated barbeque pits provided in the park. That means no personal barbeques.
- Individual groups are not allowed to arrange for privately catered on-site food or beverage service within concert boundaries.
- Dogs are not allowed in city parks except licensed assistance dogs.
- Smoking is not allowed.
