William D. Cannon Art Gallery
Founded in 1999, the William D. Cannon Art Gallery's mission is to promote, interpret and present to the community the art of emerging, mid-career and established artists from culturally diverse Southern California and to showcase the cultural creativity and art from other parts of the world. The curatorial focus of the gallery includes painting, sculpture, photography, print-making, mixed-media, folk art, design and installation works.

André Kertész: On Reading Feb. 21 – April 18, 2010
A prominent member of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s circle in 1920’s Paris, André Kertész created a series of photographs in Europe and the US, examining the power of reading as a universal pleasure. These 104 stunning photographs are drawn from the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Columbia College, Chicago. |

Over the past nine years, the William D. Cannon Art Gallery Juried Exhibitions have become an important showcase for the work of both emerging and mid-career artists in San Diego. Open to artists who live, work or have a studio in San Diego County, guest jurors are always professionals in the visual arts. Past jurors have included visual artists, museum directors and curators, commercial gallery owners, and university gallery directors and art professors. more details

Tesoros Mexicanos: Mexican Treasures from Two Folk Art Collections May 2 – June 27, 2010
In this exhibition, the nature of Mexican popular arts is explored through the eyes of private collectors Tom and Alma Pirazzini and Lawrence Kent. Long interested in the ancient civilizations of the Americas, Tom and Alma Pirazzini have traveled extensively to build their collection of masks, lacquerware and pre-Columbian treasures. Avid collector Lawrence Kent, has accumulated wonderful folk art pieces from places such as Oaxaca, Jalisco and Mexico City. This show is a rare opportunity to see so many superb and diverse works of Mexican folk art in one intimate setting. |

Portraits from the Golden Age of Jazz: Photographs by William P. Gottlieb July 11 – Aug. 29, 2010
During the 1930s and 1940s, columnist and editor, William Gottlieb, photographed the contemporary jazz scene to illustrate his columns in publications such as The Washington Post and Down Beat magazine. Gottlieb is now recognized as a true pioneer, and his images of jazz artists from the era have become the standard icons of jazz history. This exhibition features 71 of those historic photographs.
In addition, to celebrate the 25th year of the City’s TGIF Jazz in the Parks concert series, a selection of some of our favorite contemporary photographs from the TGIF concerts will be on display. |
