Summer Arts Camps
The Cultural Arts Office offers children a variety of summer arts camp experiences including Creative Arts Camps and Club Pelican. All camps are staffed by professional artists or educators, a camp aide and many energetic and talented volunteers. These camps are offered to children ages 7 to 11 years old. Camp brochures with full descriptions and registration forms are usually available at the Cultural Arts Office, both libraries and recreation community centers, by mid to late March.
Held at the Batiquitos Lagoon, Club Pelican brings together the worlds of nature and art. Young campers hike the trails of the Batiquitos Lagoon; explore animal habitats, lagoon birds, native plants, insects, and geology; and then create artworks inspired by what they observed in this beautiful natural setting. This camp meets daily, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon. This fun-filled camp, led by both a naturalist and an artist, is held in partnership with the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation.
Session one, young artists are encouraged to explore freely and use their imaginations while engaging in one or more of the expressive arts—visual art, theater, dance or music. This interactive session offers age-appropriate lessons, exposure to a wide range of media, and an experienced and friendly teaching staff who will help bring a child’s creativity to life. This two week camp meets daily, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon, and is offered to children ages seven to nine years old. This camp is held with the support of the Carlsbad Unified School District.
Session two emphasizes a collaboration of the visual arts and theater, with a touch of music mixed in as well. Campers will work with a visual artist to experiment with a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, sculptural design, textiles, mask making and more! Each day the theater instructor will lead children through a series of performance activities and exercises. Venture into theatre games and participate in improvisation, basic script writing, clowning and movement. All activities are designed to promote personal expression and self-confidence. This camp meets daily, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is offered to children ages nine to 12 years old.
