Elliott Erwitt: Dog Dogs
Aug. 4 – Nov. 3, 2013

Noted American photographer Elliott Erwitt leaves little question about his love of “man’s best friend,” even at the risk of being called a sentimentalist. But if this exhibition of 65 black and white photographs proves anything, it’s that our close relationship with these creatures of the canine world is due to mutual resemblance and emotion. In his vast range of sentiment, and in his easygoing but precise mastery of the abstract elements of composition, Elliott Erwitt explores our close relationship with these furry fellow travelers.

Vanishing Traditions: Textiles and Treasures from Southwest China
Apr. 2 – June 2, 2013

Featuring the stunning private collection of local collector Bea Roberts, this exhibition showcases Chinese textiles, clothing and crafts of the Guizhou Province in Southwest China. Segregated both culturally and regionally from the main Chinese populace, the rich cultural identity of this province and other inaccessible regions is often preserved and almost unknown to the outside world. This exhibition is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse into the crafts, costumes and silver adornments of the region’s cultures.

Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art
Oct. 7 – Dec. 30, 2012

Since the first graphic was drawn onto a board, the culture of skateboarding has grown hand-in-hand with visual arts. This exhibition presents over 275 skateboards, skate decks, plus dozens of photographs and original artwork from the 1960s to the present. The eye-catching images on these skateboards are one of the purest forms of self-expression: highly personal and created without artistic boundaries – just like skateboarding itself.

The Sentinel

2013 Juried Biennial Exhibition
Jan. 20 – March 9

In 14 years, the Cannon Art Gallery Juried Exhibitions have become recognized as one of San Diego County’s most significant showcases for both emerging and mid-career artists who live, work or have a studio in San Diego County.

This year’s jurors for the Biennial were Scott Canty, director of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and Chantel Paul, assistant curator of the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) in Balboa Park, San Diego.
