Fire Station #3 Proposed Design

Location of artwork

In December 2012, artist Betsy Schulz was selected as the public artist for the City of Carlsbad’s Fire Station # 3, tentatively scheduled to open February 2015. The new facility will be located at Cannon Road and Wind Trail Way.

The proposed art murals and concrete treatments are designed to encourage visitors to walk to the front of the entry, interact with the murals and learn about Fire Station #3 and some facts about firefighting.

Fire Station #3 mural

Fire Box Display Murals: These three murals are located to the right of the station's front door, when viewed from the outside. The murals consist of a combination of historical, fire-related artifacts and sculpted firefighter gear in the foreground. The background contains glass chunks, found objects (some melted by fire), and tiles with silk-screened photos, historical facts, newspaper headlines, and snippets of text specific to the Carlsbad Fire Department. The total area of the murals is approximately 40" x 60" with a depth of 12".

Fire station #3 mural

This is one of four murals located to the left of the front doors. The hose, ladder and tools are all sculpted. The nozzle is a vintage item. The frame is made of either painted aluminum to match the building trim or a metal with rusted finish that is sealed and waxed. The area of this mural is approximately 36" x 65".

Small mural (1 of 3)

This is second of the four murals located to the left of the front doors. There are three glass murals this size (9" x 9").

Location of artwork

The mural materials are a mixture of glass, tiles, metal and other found objects. The color palette is earthy, with red and yellow glass adding the pop of color.

Location of artwork

To create a connection between the murals to the concrete in the front entry, a crushed red, yellow, orange and black glass is seeded into a sanded finish. The glass is more solidly concentrated near the entry where the murals are located, then gradually fades out farther away from the building. The colors of the glass relates to the colors in the murals. It also gives the effect of embers going out on the ground. The treatment continues into the building, where it has a more polished finish.
