Severe weather presents in a variety of forms including: heavy winter rain and associated flooding, severe heat, tornadoes and hurricanes. Tornadoes and hurricanes have struck southern California and San Diego in the past, although very infrequently.

Heavy rain

Heavy rain jeopardizes transportation safety. It can also weaken soil resulting in erosion and mudslides. Severe winter weather and flooding does not necessitate activating the city's emergency operations center in most instances.  However, during periods of severe weather causing wide-spread damage to utilities, facilities or transportation, Carlsbad residents are encouraged to stay clear of the impacted area and consult the Carlsbad current incident Web page and local media to stay informed.

Severe winter weather can be accompanied by high surf. Carlsbad residents are encouraged to stay clear of beaches during periods of high surf or severe rip currents.

Severe heat

Severe heat can present a number of challenges. Foremost, severe heat poses a health risk, particularly to the elderly, non-ambulatory and those suffering from illness. In addition, increased public demand for air conditioning can place additional stress on the electrical power grid potentially jeopardizing electricity availability in selected areas.
