Wildland Fire
Wildland fire is an uncontrolled, non-structure fire that occurs in rural, woodland or bush areas. Wildland fires differ from other fires by their extensive size, speed of spread, ability to change direction unexpectedly, and ability to jump gaps, such as roads, rivers and fire breaks. Wildfires can cause extensive destruction of homes and other property located in the wildland-urban interface, the zone between developed and undeveloped areas, and can move from the interface area to more densely populated communities. In addition to the threat posed by the wildfire itself, the fire's smoke and ash can cause unhealthful air quality. Nine out of ten wildfires are caused by some type of human interaction; others are caused by natural events such as lightning strikes, etc.
While wildfires can occur year-round in Southern California, the wildland fire season for the region is usually defined as July to November. Wildland fires pose the greatest threat to the San Diego region during Santa Ana conditions when high winds can rapidly drive fire across broad areas.
During dry season (July - November), wildland fire hazard is extremely high and can become acute during periods of high winds. Conditions that can increase the likelihood of a wildland fire are:
- High winds: Santa Ana winds create flash point conditions
- Weather: dry, low humidity
- Available fuels: despite 2007 firestorm, unburnt vegetation at a record high
- Drought conditions
- Topography shapes fire's path
- Hazard intensifies in summer/fall
- Carlsbad can experience the same fire hazard conditions as east San Diego county despite proximity to the coast
Most Wildland fires can be linked to human causes. However, awareness and action can mitigate human causes.
