Computers
The Carlsbad City Library offers public access computers and a free wireless Internet signal at its Dove, Cole and Learning Center locations. Use of the computers and software is free.
Software on adult access computers:
- Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Internet access (Internet Explorer 7)
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Windows Media Player
- Scanning (Dove and Cole only)
Printing options:
- Black & white and color laser printing is available
- 15¢ per page for black & white
- 75¢ per page for color
- Wireless printing is not available
Saving options:
- Bring a portable storage device to the Library
- Purchase a USB drive from the Library (provided by Friends of the Library)
- Purchase a CD or diskette from the Library (provided by Friends of the Library)
- E-mail the work to a personal account
Computer classes at the library are free; registration is required. Call for additional information or to register.
Mouse Basics
This is a basic introduction to mousing skills necessary for using a computer.
Microsoft Word
Learn to create and edit new documents. Some Windows experience required.
Internet Basics
This hands-on class is designed for those who have little or no Internet experience.
Browser Essentials
Learn to organize bookmarks and customize the Internet browser. Basic Internet knowledge is required.
Internet Tips and Tricks
Learn ways to make surfing the Internet easier by customizing the browser.
Internet Searching
Discover search engines. Learn great search strategies and time-saving tips and tricks for online research. This class is designed for those who have basic Internet experience.
E-mail Basics
Set up a free e-mail account on the World Wide Web. Basic Internet knowledge is required.
Computer Tutoring at Dove Library
Get one-on-one help with e-mail, Internet, Microsoft Word and other Office programs with a volunteer computer tutor. The tutor can also cover the same material covered in classes. Call the Dove Computer Lab to make an appointment.
Registration and check-in
All users must have a Carlsbad City Library Card and read and sign an Internet and Computer User Agreement. Patrons' library records will reflect that they have read and signed this agreement. Patrons will use their library card to access a computer. Library cards are non-transferable. A one-hour session is standard and may be extended if no one is waiting. There is no limit on number of sessions per day.
Visitors
Visitor passes are available for those who live outside San Diego County and who will be in the area for a limited time. Passes are valid for two weeks. Visitors are required to show identification and read and sign the Internet and Computer User Agreement.
Children
All computer users under the age of 18 must have parental consent. Children under the age of 13 must use the terminals in the children's area. Children under the age of 12 must have a parent remain with them while they use the Internet. Children 13-18 may use adult or children's terminals. Adults who are supervising their child's use of the computer in a children's area may use a terminal if one is available, with the understanding that if a child needs a computer they must relinquish their terminal. Parents are responsible for the terms of user agreement whether accompanying the child or not. Guidelines for Internet safety are available at www.safekids.com. Computers are not equipped with filtering software.
Equipment use
All users must follow the guidelines set forth in the Carlsbad City Library Internet and Computer User Agreement. Only library installed software and hardware may be used. Adding or deleting software is not permitted.
Assistance
Staff is available for assistance; however, anyone using a computer is expected to have basic Windows knowledge.
Closing
The computers shut down 10 minutes before the Library closes.
