Carlsbad Reads Together

Carlsbad Reads Together brings community members together and engages them in discussion about the same book at the same time. Sponsored in part by the Friends of the Carlsbad Library, this program is held each April to complement National Library Week. The 2013 selection is Lisa See's New York Times bestseller Shanghai Girls. Download the event flier.

Shanghai Girls follows the journey of sisters Pearl and May from the Shanghai of the 1930s to Los Angeles' Chinatown in the mid-20th Century.  Read an excerpt.

What is Carlsbad Reads Together?

Carlsbad Reads Together is a citywide reading program that is patterned after successful initiatives in other communities across the nation. Since 1998, more than 300 cities have participated. The goal is to encourage members of a community to come together and read and discuss the same book, cultivating a love of lifelong learning and adding richness to the experience of reading.

How and why are books selected?

The Library forms a selection committee for Carlsbad Reads Together and aims to find a book that will appeal to a wide audience of many ages, is available in several different forms (paperback, audiobook,eBook), and is ripe with topics for discussion.

Who can participate?

Anyone who lives in, works in, or visits Carlsbad is encouraged to participate and attend any of the numerous events that the Library schedules for each Carlsbad Reads Together program.

What's the best way to participate?

Once a book is selected, check it out from the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane, the Georgina Cole Library or the Library Learning Center. Or purchase a copy from a local bookstore. Attend one (or more) of the Library's book discussions, film screenings or other events. All events are free.
