Reading and Writing Help

Adult learners entering the program are:

  • English-speaking (English is their only language or they are able to converse clearly in English)
  • At least 16 years old and not currently enrolled in high school
  • Women and men from diverse backgrounds
  • Seeking better job skills
  • Wanting to help their children succeed in school
  • Often able to do some reading and writing but not enough to participate effectively in today’s rapidly changing world

Those who are ready to change their lives can call Literacy Services at the Carlsbad City Library Learning Center at 760-931-4510.

Time commitment for an adult learner:

  • Attend a 45-minute Learner Orientation
  • Complete a 1 ½-hour assessment
  • Attend two, 1 ½-hour tutoring sessions per week
  • Complete at least one hour a week of study at home

What learners study:

  • Phonics and spelling
  • Reading aloud
  • Handwriting and use of the computer keyboard
  • Reading comprehension and vocabulary
  • Capitalization and punctuation
  • Writing checks, notes and letters
  • Communicating thoughts in written form
  • Job-related reading and writing
  • Maps, geography, history, government
  • Arithmetic and daily life math
  • Using the public library
  • Study skills
