When we study:

• A learner and tutor meet at least twice a week for 1 ½ hours each session and set their own schedule.  Tutoring can be scheduled daytime or evening, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We believe that:

• We all learn from each other.
• Learners and tutors are learning partners.
• Learning is fun and exciting.
• Learners and tutors have individual learning styles and goals.
• Each tutor and learner has a unique life history.
• How something is taught is as important as what is taught

Every learner in the program:

• Works on specific literacy goals, such as learning the alphabet, reading a book or learning to complete a job application.
• Reads and writes at every session.
• Starts with beginning skills and builds to more complex ones, filling in holes in previous learning.
• Reads printed materials, handwritten materials and information on a computer screen.
• Writes using pencil, pen and the computer keyboard.

Every tutoring session includes:

• Structured, step-by-step instruction in basic skills such as phonics, sight words, handwriting, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, vocabulary, and comprehension.
• Attention to a learner’s individual literacy needs and goals, such as filling out job applications, writing personal letters, or reading books to a child.

In addition to one-to-one tutoring, some learners study in small groups toward special goals, such as creative writing, computer skills, or registering to vote.
