The genealogy collection is one of the largest in Southern California and has a strong emphasis on the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries in the United States.
Genealogy staff has created user guides to assist patrons in using some of the more complex or difficult sources in the collection.

The collection includes:
- Printed books and journals, microfilm, microfiche and CDs
- United States city directories through 1881 on microfiche and microfilm
- County histories in print and on microfiche
- County atlases in print
- State censuses on microfilm
- A small circulating collection of duplicate books

The North San Diego County Genealogical Society sponsors the following programs:
- Business meeting/sharing: second Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. in the Cole Library Community Room
- Program/lecture: fourth Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. in Carlsbad City Council Chambers
- Computer genealogy: second Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. in Carlsbad City Council Chambers
- Beginning genealogy classes: occasional Saturday and Monday evenings. Please ask at the Genealogy Desk for schedules and to sign up.
- Special Spring Seminar given by Curt B. Witcher entitled "Ancestral Origins: A Key to Your Family Geneology," will be held at the Carlsbad Senior Center on Saturday, March 24, 2012.
