The “Greenest” Park in the City

Alga Norte Community Park has been designed to be the most environmentally sustainable park in the City of Carlsbad.

Construction

  • Minimized the amount of airborne dust and pollution caused by construction.
  • Diverted 70 percent of normal construction waste from local landfills by recycling all concrete, steel, plastic, wood and other materials.
  • Purchased materials from sources within 500 miles of the site, whenever feasible, reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Used materials with recycled contents, including insulation, ceiling tiles, furniture, synthetic turf and concrete.
  • Used shredded, recycled rubber that would have gone to a local landfill to provide cushions on the tot lot, training room and synthetic turf fields.
  • Installed special landscaping called “bio swales” along the park’s perimeter to naturally filter storm runoff before it flows to local streams and the ocean.

Lighting

  • Tubular solar lights collect and concentrate sunlight to illuminate building interiors, reducing the need for electrical lights during daytime.
  • Energy-saving LED fixtures light the pool, parking lot, building exteriors and walkways, saving about $14,000 a year in energy costs.
  • High-efficiency lighting illuminates the sports fields and aquatic center, saving about $40,000 a year.

Heating

  • A solar thermal heating system will preheat pool water before it enters heaters, saving about $18,000 annually in energy costs..

Energy efficient systems

  • High efficiency pool pump motors circulate pool water, reducing energy use.
  • Energy management systems continuously monitor and deliver information on electrical demand to enable the city to reduce costs by managing the time of use of lighting, building and pool systems.
  • Overall intelligent design, including high efficiency heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, cut electricity demand.
  • Carbon dioxide sensors turn ventilation systems off in community rooms if they're unoccupied or partially occupied. This small investment of $100 per sensor will save thousands of dollars in energy costs.
  • “Low e glazing,” which consists of double-pane windows, conserves energy by filtering out ultraviolet rays and glare.
  • Appliances and concession equipment are all Energy Star rated.

Water

  • Recycled water irrigates most of the grounds, except the aquatic center, reducing use of potable water.
  • Synthetic turf covers two of the three ball fields and the aquatic center grounds, saving irrigation water.
  • Water-saving native and adaptive plants were used throughout the park.
  • Weather-based, central command irrigation controllers assure efficient use of both recycled and potable water.
  • Low-flow toilet fixtures and showerheads conserve water.

Other

  • Ultraviolet lighting in instructional pools kills bacteria, reducing chemical demand.
  • Automated monitoring stations on each pool will adjust the chemistry, saving on chemicals.
  • Nearly 350 trees were planted throughout the park, helping to absorb greenhouse gases.
