What kinds of amenities will be available?

Will there be a fee to use the park facilities?
All fees will be determined and set by the City Council prior to the park opening. Proposed fees may include reduced rates for Carlsbad residents.
What kinds of programs will be offered at the new aquatic center?
The aquatic center is designed to be used for instruction, recreation and competitive use. Swim lessons, classes and open swim will continue to be available. Other activities and programs also may be offered.
What is a "universally accessible" playground?
A universally accessible playground is a play environment specifically created to be accessible to all children including those with disabilities. It features more physically challenging routes of travel and/or activities beside ramp-accessible routes enabling children of all abilities to play side-by-side. Alga Norte Community Park will feature a playground with 100 percent universally accessible play equipment.
What will it cost to build the park?
The city's Capital Improvement Program budget has $50.4 million set aside for the project. The current estimated cost to build Phase I of the park is $40 million. Phase I includes park amenities (such as athletic fields, picnic areas and playgrounds), a dog park, skatepark, and specific elements of the aquatic center. Proposed projects, including a "lazy river," pool slides and wet play structure, will not be built in the initial phase.
In 2002, Carlsbad voters approved Proposition C, which designated funding for four city projects. The remaining funding will come from public facility funds collected from residential development fees.
Was there public input on the project?
The public has participated in the development of the park from the early planning stages, including at City Council meetings, public workshops and Parks & Recreation Commission meetings. Since June 2002, there have been 15 public meetings and workshops specifically addressing the park and aquatic center. There have also been 12 other public meetings that included discussions about the project.
The Alga Norte Community Park master plan was approved in 2003.
