Athlete Information

The Carlsbad Triathlon is celebrating its 31st year July 8, 2012. Thank you to all the athletes who have participated over the years.
The Carlsbad Triathlon is a sprint race consisting of a 1K ocean swim, 25K two-lap bike course and a 5K run. Participants who are unable to complete the event for any reason must turn in their timing chips and report to the timing tent, located at the finish line. This is a mandatory requirement in order to maintain a record of all participants, to ensure participant safety and for the peace of mind of friends and family. Failure to return a chip will result in a $30 fine.
On race day, remember to bring the following items:
|
velcro band/timing chip
swim cap
swim goggles
wet suit (optional)
bike helmet
running shoes |
cycling shoes (optional)
sun screen
towel
socks
water bottle |
Special Note: If there are extreme weather conditions including, but not limited to high surf, strong rip tides, or poor visibility due to fog, the swim portion of the race may be canceled. The triathlon would then transition into a run-bike-run. The California State Lifeguards will assess the water conditions the day of the race. Safety of all participants is our priority.

The swim
For a printable swim map, click here.
The 1K swim will take place in the Pacific Ocean just below Cherry Street (near tower 36). The U- shaped course will keep swimmers close to shore and out of the kelp beds. There will be orange buoys to mark the course with large balloons flying above the corner turns. Swimmers should practice in a supervised open-water environment before participating in the race.
For more information regarding the swim course, see the "Frequently Asked Questions" section in this website.
The bike
For printable bike map, click here.
The 25K bike portion begins immediately after the swim in the Tamarack Avenue parking lot, known as the "transition area". This section of the race is a two-lap, rolling hill course along the California coastline down Carlsbad Boulevard, again ending up at the transition area to change for the final run portion.
For more information regarding the bike course, see the "Frequently Asked Questions" section in this website.
The run
For printable run map, click here.
The 5K run is a one-lap course that travels north on the seawall making a loop by the Encina Power Plant and finishing along Carlsbad Boulevard a little north of Tamarack Avenue.
For more information regarding the run course, see the "Frequently Asked Questions" section in this website.
Timing
- Participants are required to wear a Velcro band/chip, at the ankle, throughout the race.
- Relay team members must pass the band/chip at each transition. After you finish, turn in the band/chip at the end of the finish zone.
- A participant who pulls out of the race must report to the timing tent to turn in the band/chip and collect personal gear from the transition area (after 10:30 a.m.). There is a $30 charge for a lost band/chip.
The swim
- The first wave starts at 8 a.m. (unless there's a weather delay) with 5 minutes between each wave.
- Swimmers will be assigned to a wave with no more than 150 people (based on age group). Each wave is designated by a colored cap.
- Lost a cap? See a race official at the swim start and be sure to get the correct color cap. Do not change waves. Swimmers starting in the wrong wave will not receive a time and/or may be disqualified.
- Swimmers should seed themselves according to swimming ability (fast swimmers to the front). Please try to avoid striking or swimming over another swimmer(s).
- Wetsuits are optional at the Carlsbad Triathlon, since water temperature can be a bit unpredictable. Generally expect a temperature range of 64° to 67°.
- No swimming aids (eg., fins, kickboards, buoyancy devices) are allowed.
- A swimmer in need of assistance should roll over on his back and wave to a lifeguard.
- Swimmers are welcome to warm up in the water between 6:15 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. but are urged to stay near the shore.
The bike
- Although a bike safety inspection is not mandatory, it is highly recommended.
- The bike leg takes place on City of Carlsbad roadways. In some locations, cyclists will be sharing the roads with vehicular traffic. In those instances, the bike and car lanes will be separated by orange traffic cones. Riders must stay in their lane, ride to the right and always pass other cyclists on the left.
- A participant whose bike breaks down mid-race must remove the bike and exit the course. Officials with trucks will be circulating the course. Need assistance? Flag down a truck.
