Tamarack State Beach
The Carlsbad Triathlon course begins at Tamarack Surf Beach, and follows the coastline of Carlsbad, past scenic beaches, lagoons and a wildlife preserve. The triathlon boasts a calm ocean swim, a rolling bike course and a smooth run for the finish.
This race is for everybody: from first-timers to the elites, and their friends and family! The race begins with an open-water ocean swim, which is well-marked with buoys. The swim is followed by a bike course, and the race finishes with a run along the beautiful Pacific Ocean coastline. The roads are wide and completely closed to traffic-very safe! The course is mostly flat with a couple of rolling areas.

The Carlsbad Triathlon is a sprint race consisting of a 1K ocean swim, 25K two-lap bike course and a 5K run. Participants who are unable to complete the event for any reason must turn in their timing chips and report to the timing tent, located at the finish line. This is a mandatory requirement in order to maintain a record of all participants, to ensure participant safety and for the peace of mind of friends and family. Failure to return a chip will result in a $30 lost chip fee.

The 1K swim will take place in the Pacific Ocean just below Cherry Street (near tower 36). The U- shaped course will keep swimmers close to shore and out of the kelp beds. There will be orange buoys to mark the course with large balloons flying above the corner turns. Swimmers should practice in a supervised open-water environment before participating in the race.

Special Note: If there are extreme weather conditions including, but not limited to high surf, strong rip tides, or poor visibility due to fog, the swim portion of the race may be canceled. The triathlon would then transition into a run-bike-run. The California State Lifeguards will assess the water conditions the day of the race. Safety of all participants is our priority.

The 25K bike portion begins immediately after the swim in the Tamarack Avenue parking lot, known as the "transition area". This section of the race is a two-lap, rolling hill course along the California coastline down Carlsbad Boulevard, again ending up at the transition area to change for the final run portion.

The 5K run is a one-lap course that travels north on the seawall making a loop by the Encina Power Plant and finishing along Carlsbad Boulevard a little north of Tamarack Avenue.

NOTE: Participants who have not finished the race by 10:45 a.m. will be redirected to the finish line via an alternate route using the sidewalk and will be considered pedestrians. This will be strictly enforced by the Carlsbad Police Department.

Awards ceremony begins at 10:15 a.m.
Open age groups
Awards go to the top three men and women in each of the following age groups: Elite, 19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-89, 90 and over, Clydesdale, Athena, and Challenged. A special trophy is awarded to the Best Overall Male, Best Overall Female, and Best Overall Relay Team.
Awards go to the top three teams (two or three team members to a team) in each of the following categories: male, female, co-ed and senior.
Each participant receives a goodie bag and an event t-shirt.
Volunteers are needed for several positions on race day, July 13, including athlete check-in, body marking, hospitality, timing crew and a wide variety of other jobs. It's a great way to experience the Triathlon up close without actually having to race! Volunteer help is also needed during the Lifestyle & Fitness Festival, July 12.

A volunteer orientation/training meeting will take place on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the Carlsbad Senior Center located at 799 Pine Ave. The meeting will be held in the dining room from 6 - 7:30 p.m. A light dinner will be provided by TGIFridays.

Triathlon volunteers are entitled to the following benefits:

- FREE food and drink just like the athletes get.
Volunteer Job Descriptions
Athlete Check-in: Register athletes and give out race packets to pre-registrants. Some lifting required.
Body Marking: Write race numbers on athletes.
Collate Packets: Assist in putting information and samples in athletes’ packages.
Finish Line: Make sure athletes stay in order. Retrieve timing chip and direct to refreshments.
Hospitality/Food Prep: Prepare and serve snacks to the participants after the race.
Nurses: Apply basic ﬁrst aid. Supplies will be provided.
Photographer: Photograph elements of the Wellness Expo and/or Triathlon. Must provide own camera. We will provide memory chip.
Run Course/Bike Course: Monitor traﬃc and explain course and safety to public.
Setup/Tear Down Crew: Help set up canopies, tables and chairs. Assit with loading and unloading. Heavy lifting is required.
Timing Crew: Help athletes with timing by announcing times during the race and at the ﬁnish line.
Transition: Help ensure that safety rules are followed while participants change from swimming gear to bike gear to running gear.
Water Stations: Fill water cups and pass out water to athletes. Report injuries, give support.
