Station Volunteer of the Year

Station volunteer of the yearJuvenile Justice Panel Member Al Nyman

Al began his volunteer service as an original founding member of the Juvenile Justice Program, in 1986.  He is a strong advocate for youth. He wholeheartedly believes everyone is capable of reaching their full potential, regardless of any situation. His highly unorthodox interviewing methods are uniquely memorable, leaving a lasting impression on anyone who has had the distinct privilege of serving with him on the JJP panel. The end result is remarkable in that he ultimately inspires young people, and their families, to make life changing choices and pursue bright futures instead of a life of crime.

Al’s extensive training and experience as a former law enforcement officer has made him a highly respected voice of wisdom.  His distinguished career has included serving his country as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corp, Campus Police Chief at Grossmont College, retiring as a Lieutenant with the San Diego County Sheriff Department after 30 years, serving as the Watch Commander at the Vista Detention Center, as well as being a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Even though he retired in 2004, he has continued to work tirelessly as a professor at Mira Costa College, teaching Criminal Justice to students since 1977.  He also actively serves as a volunteer for Tri- City Medical Center, and an Expulsion Consultant for Oceanside Unified School District Student Attendance Review Board.

Al has been married to his lovely wife, Doris, a retired school teacher, for 37 years. Together, they have been blessed to share the joys of parenthood in raising their daughter, Leslie, and their son, Calvin.

Al Nyman is a man with a big heart and a goal to help others, whenever and wherever he can. We are blessed that he has made room in his heart, and time in his life, for Carlsbad’s Juvenile Justice Program, and the youth of our community.
