On 10-02-98, at 0853 hours, emergency units were dispatched to the area of Palomar Airport Road and Hidden Valley Road for a male subject lying in the bushes. It was determined the subject was a victim of a fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian collision, felony hit and run.

This accident is believed to have occurred between 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Physical evidence at the scene indicates that the victim, Robert Verdin, was running eastbound in the designated bike lane with the flow of traffic on Palomar Airport Road. It appeared the suspect vehicle was also traveling eastbound on Palomar Airport Road and for unknown reasons drove into the bike lane, hitting Verdin and throwing him into the bushes where he was found. After the impact, the vehicle continued eastbound hitting the south cement curb of Palomar Airport Road. Evidence of tire scuffmarks on the curb shows the right side tires hit the curb and went up onto the dirt shoulder. The vehicle continued eastbound straddling the curb for approximately 80' before returning to the roadway. Based on evidence at the scene, the vehicle is believed to be a 1989 Ford Taurus.
