Greater Understanding through Intervention, Diversion and Education
GUIDE is a prevention program unique to the City of Carlsbad that educates young people on self-esteem, positive decision-making and the dangers of substance abuse and gang involvement. GUIDE is a group-counseling program, which works cooperatively with the Carlsbad Unified School District. Small groups lead by licensed counselors are oriented toward prevention and intervention. Group sessions are 8 to 10 weeks long and run throughout the school year. Additionally, GUIDE counselors offer a parenting education and support group component.
It is the philosophy of GUIDE that the education of students and parents constitute a positive, important and effective means of developing alternative strategies that will emphasize personal accountability for actions, whether they are school-related or community-related.

Parent Project
The Parent Project is a series of classes designed to help parents successfully deal with hard to handle children age 5 and over. This parenting skills program is designed for parents facing the challenges of strong-willed, non-compliant and/or out of control children who consistently test limits, argue, break house rules and/or engage in dangerous high-risk or self-destructive behaviors.
The Parent Project offers parents concrete, no-nonsense solutions to even the most difficult of problems. The curriculum used addresses both current problems as well as proactive preparation for the challenges of raising children in today’s society. Special training is available to parents of children with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
