With the inaugural concert in the summer of 1986, the TGIF series was founded the same year the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office was established. For over 25 years, the series was known as TGIF Jazz in the Parks, and featured jazz musicians from San Diego, as well as across southern California and nationally.
Those first concerts presented lively music and a few hundred music fans came to have a good time in city parks, like Magee, Holiday and Pine Avenue community parks. In the years following, TGIF’s audiences grew – in 2016, over 30,000 friends and neighbors gathered together to enjoy these diverse musical experiences presented in the four largest parks in Carlsbad.
New amenities and activities include Family Open Studios at all nine concerts, food vendors to satisfy cravings for the whole family and acquiring a state of the art mobile stage in 2016 to provide an improved concert experience for our musicians and audiences alike.
TGIF would not be possible without the support of many; it really does take a Carlsbad village!
In addition to the program staff in the Cultural Arts Office, special recognition is due to other city staff and departments who make the concerts possible, including Parks & Recreation, Public Works, Carlsbad Police, Carlsbad Explorers Post 781 and Senior Volunteer Patrol. All the contracted vendors, businesses and individuals deserve a heartfelt thank you for their support of TGIF through advertisements in the programs and partner opportunities, as well as in-kind goods and services.

This year’s on-site food vendors are tasty, convenient, affordable and offer something for everyone.

Even though City of Carlsbad’s Municipal Code prohibits glass containers in city parks, the city recognizes that TGIF picnickers traditionally bring glass beverage containers to the concerts. So, just for TGIF Concerts in the Parks, the city has issues a waiver of this regulation. If you do come across any broken or discarded glass, please alert the concert crew so it can be taken care of immediately.
The city is proud to have a strong commitment to recycling and reducing landfill waste. Please separate your empty bottles and cans from the rest of your trash.
Everyone knows TGIF is a time to dance the night away! In order to avoid anyone being jitterbugged on, seating, picnicking and any and all blankets, chairs, picnics and related items are restricted to grass areas and away from the infield area.
Have a great time – and don’t forget to dance!
