Turn It Up Band Competition

Turn It Up is a band competition program designed to showcase and develop emerging musical talent ages 18 to 25 in San Diego County. The program offers free classes and resources for participants to help enhance their business acumen and artistry, opportunities for live performances and great prizes. Participation is free to eligible bands and online applications are being accepted through May 15.

Finalists will perform before judges at Front Row Fridays on June 14. The winner will perform the pre-show TGIF Concerts in the Parks on July 5 and be awarded additional prizes.

Competition Overview

The competition is open to San Diego County bands, ages 18 to 25. No groups signed with a label, recording company or agent may enter. All participants are strongly encouraged to review the Turn It Up program information in detail before applying.

  • Ensembles must include at least two and no more than 10 members.
  • Submission requirements include two video recordings with audio and a brief questionnaire about the band. All participants are strongly encouraged to review the Turn It Up submission guidelines in detail before applying.
  • The deadline for submissions is May 15.

Submission Entry

Eligibility

  • All ensembles who enter must be available to rehearse and perform on the following dates and times:
    • Finalists – TGIF Turn It Up Band Competition Showcase: Friday, June 14, 2019 from 3 to 9 p.m.
    • First Place Winner – TGIF Preshow performance: July 5, 2019 from 3 to 7 p.m.
  • Simple majority of ensemble members must be between the ages of 18 to 25 on or before April 30, 2019.
    • Any ensemble members under of the age of 18 will require parental permissions and accompaniment for programs. More information will be made available for groups with members under 18.
  • Simple majority of ensemble members must reside in San Diego County for the duration of the Turn It Up Band Competition program
  • Ensembles must include at least 2 and no more than 10 members

Program Timeline

May 15: Online submissions close

May 24: Selected finalists announced

June 14: Finalists perform live for judges as part of Front Row Fridays: Turn It Up Band Competition event, 7 p.m. at the Schulman Auditorium, 1775 Dove Lane

July 5: First Place winner will perform a 30-minute preshow as part of the TGIF Concerts in the Parks, series at Stagecoach Community Park, 3420 Camino De Los Coches

Prizes

Prizes for the Turn It Up winner include:

  • Participation in the GenNext College Music Program at The 2020 NAMM Show
  • Recording Arts workshops at MiraCosta Community College
  • Preshow performance at a TGIF Concerts in the Park event for 2,000+ audience members
  • Cash prizes and more

Workshops, Classes and Resources

The City of Carlsbad’s Library & Cultural Arts Department offers a variety of workshops and resources to local musicians and bands, regardless of participation in the Turn It Up Band Competition program. Bands interested in entering Turn It Up Band Competition are encouraged to participate in these programs, as some topics may be useful for creating your submission materials.
