Citizens Academy

The City of Carlsbad Citizens Academy is a free, seven-week program designed to help Carlsbad residents learn about their city government. It is held twice a year, in the spring and fall, on consecutive Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the exception of one session that includes a citywide bus tour at noon.  

Participants will:

  • Meet City Council members, department heads and staff
  • Learn how decisions are made, how city funds are allocated and how departments operate
  • Enjoy comprehensive overviews of departments and programs and services
  • Discover the current status and future plans for Carlsbad's development, traffic, growth management, recreation, the environment and other topics
  • Participate in lively discussions, role-playing and other fun interactive activities
  • Tour city facilities
  • Become an informed, involved citizen

Citizens Academy is held twice a year, in the spring and fall. Applications are accepted year round, and participants are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis. 

The academy is free to Carlsbad residents 15 years and older. Class size is limited, and spaces fill up quickly. Call 760-434-2800 today for information and registration.  Completed applications should be returned to:
